The Words Matter document was originally published by The Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) in 2006 as a reference guide for journalists. PDCN released updated publications in 2008, 2010 and 2014 for general readership. The Words Matter document continues to be responsive to changes such as the signing of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Disability Inclusion Act and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
PDCN would like to acknowledge and thank people who reviewed previous editions of the words matter document, including Professor Gerard Goggin, Professor Wayne McKenna, Professor John Potts, Professor Wendy Bacon, Fiona Godfrey and members of the PDCN Board of Management.
In this edition of Words Matter we focus on the power of social language, and broaden its use to anyone who seeks to include people with disability – in workplaces, community and social groups, alongside traditional media – providing the tools and resources for all.
Should you wish, PDCN can also provide training to further develop inclusive practices. Please contact us for more information.
